This month we will be tasting...
π Guan Guan Cha
Guan (η½) mean jar, which is how this tea gets stored, while being hung from the rafters in their home. It comes from the Tai cha varietal native to Guizhou. This is a very unconventional green tea similar to puer that undergoes a soft smoking and is intended for aging. This young batch is robust and satisfying for drinking in the colder months.
π Winter Firewood Green
Most Green teas are harvested and produced in the spring time when you get fresh tender buds coming in. This tea is made in the Winter from entire branches of tea that are steamed over firewood and separated to be dried in the crisp winter air. The result is a green tea that acts a lot like a white tea. The aromas are nutty and bready with flavors that remind me of walnuts, turkey tail mushroom and ghee, with a strong mouthfeel.
π Red Jade White Tea
This mildly oxidized white tea is made from the Hong Yu #18 cultivar. While this batch is from this year it acts much more mature than its age would suggest. The first notes are strawberries on the high end and dates on the low end and is somehow both fresh and warming at the same time.
π Guihua Hong Cha
This red tea comes to us from Wuyishan in northern Fujian and is made from material that would typically be used for lapsang. This unsmoked red tea is blended with 5% osmanthus flowers. While I usually don't prefer teas with the flowers left in, this one is masterfully balanced and the osmanthus has not been overbaked. The osmanthus brings out the fruity notes in the tea, transforming the usual sweet potato notes into something more tropical and almost wine-like. Another good warming tea for winter months.
See you Soon~ π΅
